Effects of Renegotiating U.S. Trade Agreements

Jul 12, 2018 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) --

Almost 1.5 million agriculture workers are employed in the United States. But, since the U.S. withdrew from negotiations involving the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TTP) Agreement, is currently renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and recently entered a trade war with China, there is tremendous uncertainty about American agricultural exports.

In the Organized Symposia "Renegotiating Trade Agreements: Implication for Agriculture" taking place at the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., five panelist will discuss the implications of potential renegotiation of existing U.S. Trade Agreements for Agriculture.

The organizer of this session, Troy Schmitz says "A trade war will cause the United States to lose agricultural export market share, will place downward pressure on pork, soybean, and corn prices, and will lead to a decrease in farm income for many U.S. families. Retaliatory tariffs placed on U.S. agricultural exports in response to steel and aluminum tariffs will also lead to an increase in the price of agricultural goods for consumers in the countries that impose the trade barriers."

Moderator, Ian Sheldon from the Ohio State University, will question five expert panelists: Daniel Sumner from the University of California, Davis; P. Lynn Kennedy from Louisiana State University; Luis Ribera from Texas A&M University, Thomas Wahl from North Dakota State University ; and Andrew Muhammad from the University of Tennessee. The Organized Symposium will take place on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at 10:00 am EDT.

Over 1,500 participants are expected to attend the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting, on August 5- August 7 at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, D.C.
