The Department of Environmental Affairs will host the 3rd Biodiversity Economy Indaba (BEI) at the International Convention Centre in East London, Eastern Cape, from 8 to 10 March 2018.

The 3rd BEI, which is held under the theme Entrepreneurs meets investors, for a thriving and inclusive biodiversity economy, is aimed at matching the various stockholders with aspirant investors and related markets within and outside South Africa.

The Indaba brings together multiple and diverse stakeholders in the biodiversity economy, including the hunting and game farm sectors and the bioprospecting, natural products and biotrade industries. In recent years, the biodiversity economy, which is an important contributor to job creation, has shown a constant annual growth of six percent.

The 3rd BEI comprises two main events.

On 7 March 2018, the Minister of Environmental Affairs, Dr Edna Molewa, will lead a community event at Double Drift nature reserve, which forms part of the Great Fish River Nature Reserve, near Alice to celebrate the launch of the Nofingxana communitys Double Drift wildlife economy project.

The title deed to the farm Naudeshoek 224 community will be handed over to the Nofingxana community leaders following the communitys successful land claim. The involvement of the community in the wildlife economy will alleviate poverty and create jobs through activities such as hunting and biltong making.

On 8 March 2018, Dr Molewa, will officially open the three-day Biodiversity Economy Indaba at the East London ICC. The Indaba programme includes parallel sessions on the biodiversity and biotrade sectors, the wildlife sector and eco-tourism. The Indaba will match the various stockholders from areas where plants and animal species are geographically located, with aspirant investors and related markets within and outside the borders of South Africa.
