Spain : Planas highlights cooperative integration and quality as key elements to improve the competitiveness of the olive sector

Dec 06, 2018 (Euclid Infotech Ltd via COMTEX) --

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has indicated that cooperative integration is a key measure to improve the negotiating position and thus increase the competitiveness of cooperatives and, therefore, achieve better profitability for its members.

Planas has opened in Antequera (Mlaga) the new laboratory and the dairy plant of Dcoop, the largest food group in southern Spain, a world leader in the production of virgin olive oil and one of the most important in wine, which has also diversified its production to other sectors such as livestock or nuts.

The minister has set as an example of cooperative integration to Dcoop, a group formed by more than 170 cooperatives, present in Andalusia, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and the Basque Country, and about 75,000 members, which has achieved a turnover of more than one billion of euros.

In the cooperative world "it is necessary to achieve greater concentration to improve supply and achieve better prices for the cooperative members", according to Planas, who also stressed that the focus should be on quality production to achieve greater added value.

He also pointed out that the modernization of irrigation to ensure sustainable growth and generate quality employment; and the promotion of the consumption of olive oil, especially in third countries and traditional non-consumers, are other measures developed by the Ministry to help boost the Spanish sector of the olive grove and agri-food, in general.

After the inauguration of the new facilities of this cooperative of second degree, which have received aid through the national program of rural development, Planas has presided over the ceremony of delivery of the XXII edition of Dcoop Quality Awards to the best olive oils extra virgin.

On the other hand, the minister has highlighted the value of these Dcoop Quality Awards that not only recognize the quality of extra virgin olive oils, but also the effort and work of many years, carried out by thousands of families of olive trees and the oil mills that make up the group.
