Danny O'Brien is an associate professor, sport management in the Bond Business School at Bond University, Gold Coast.

He is a graduate of Catholic College of Education, Sydney (now Australian Catholic University); California State University, Long Beach; and, De Montfort University, England. Danny currently teaches in the areas of sport governance, event management, and organisational behaviour. His primary research interest is in sustainable surf tourism and its ability to contribute to community building in developing country contexts. He has undertaken research in Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Fiji, and the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia. His other research interests explore event leverage, and strategic management in sport. Danny has completed research projects for World Rugby and the Australian Federal Government; he also sat on the Queensland State Government's "Embracing 2018 Evaluation and Monitoring Working Group" charged with developing a framework for monitoring and evaluating legacies derived from the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Each of Danny's research areas shares a common sport-for-development thread and the aim to assist stakeholders in realising community building outcomes from sport. Danny has published his work in top-tiered journals such as Journal of Sport Management; Sport Management Review; Annals of Tourism Research; and, Journal of Sustainable Tourism. He sits on the Editorial Boards of Sport Management Review, and Journal of Sport & Tourism. Danny is a Visiting Professor in the Center for Surf Research at San Diego State University, United States.
