Nov 25, 2021 (MarketLine via COMTEX) --

Finnish airport operator Finavia is set to open the new extension of Terminal 2 (T2) at Helsinki Airport (HEL) on 1 December.

SRV executed the expansion project as the main contractor.

ALA Architects designed the new portion of the terminal, along with the bus and taxi stations.

Architecture firm HKP was in charge of terminal alterations while Ramboll worked on the technical design.

HELaEUR(TM)s T2 has been designed to be 30% more aEUR~energy-efficientaEUR(TM) than officially needed.

It features thermal insulation for effective heat recovery and smart luminaires, which can modify their brightness according to the natural light in the terminal.

The new P1 Premium/P2 parking garage has the facility to allow vehicles to charge using solar power.

Apart from the main entrance and departures hall, the airport will also open a new arrivals hall.

A multimodal travel centre connecting different means of transport will also commence operations at the airport on 1 December.

With the opening of the extension, the investment programme of Finavia, which has continued for eight years, will reach its final stage.

The project is expected to conclude in 2023.

Finavia technology and sustainability senior vice-president Henri Hansson said: aEURoeIt is great that so many Finnish companies have been able to meet our strict requirements. The domestic content of the $1.12bn (ae1bn) development programme, that is, the share of the total investment taken by contracts with Finnish companies, is about 90%.aEUR

With the construction still in progress, a new security control and check-in area, as well as a restaurant area will be introduced mid-next year.

In 2023, FinaviaaEUR(TM)s entire investment programme will reach completion after the modification of the Schengen gate area and baggage claim hall.

Last month, Finavia signed a $29.02m (ae25m) loan agreement with Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) to fund the T2 expansion at HEL.
