Bentley introduces AI system to enhance leather quality

Apr 15, 2025 (MarketLine via COMTEX) --

The new system uses high-resolution cameras and AI to detect imperfections.

Volkswagen-owned Bentley Motors has introduced an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) system to improve leather selection for luxury car manufacturing.

The AI-powered Hide Inspection technology forms part of the companyaEUR(TM)s Beyond100+ strategy, focused on enhancing craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovation.

The new system automates the leather inspection process by leveraging high-resolution cameras and AI to detect imperfections such as insect bites, holes, and scars.

By identifying such defects early, the technology reduces waste and improves material efficiency, the company said.

A Bentayga SUV interior requires about nine leather hides, but since leather is natural, it often has imperfections like insect bites or scars that can affect the final finish.

BentleyaEUR(TM)s new process uses advanced cameras and AI to spot and select only the best leather cuts. This method eliminates the need for BentleyaEUR(TM)s workers to manually inspect each hide.

While the AI system enhances the initial inspection stage, it does not replace BentleyaEUR(TM)s skilled craftspeople. Instead, it ensures that only the highest quality leather is selected, allowing artisans to focus on detailed, hand-sewn finishes.

The implementation of the AI-powered Hide Inspection system also contributes to BentleyaEUR(TM)s environmental targets, with a reported reduction of 135.7kg of CO2 emissions per vehicle.

Bentley Motors member of the board for manufacturing Andreas Lehe said: aEURoeOur car interiors are crafted from the finest natural leather.

aEURoeThe investment in this pioneering new technology further enhances the sustainability of BentleyaEUR(TM)s luxurious cabins, reducing waste and optimising leather usage.

aEURoeHide Inspection is just one of many industry-first innovations at our Dream Factory in Crewe, where all Bentley models are built. Our Beyond100+ strategy will see the company reinvent its entire product range to support a more sustainable, electrified future. That includes BentleyaEUR(TM)s new digital, zero environmental impact manufacturing and quality facility, as well as the development of our first BEV (battery electric vehicle), one that will set the benchmark for the luxury cars of the future.aEUR

In February 2025, Bentley launched excellence centre for quality & launch facility at its headquarters in Crewe, the UK, in preparation for the all-electric vehicle launch.

The facility marks a significant step in the firmaEUR(TM)s shift towards electrification as part of its aEUR~BentleyaEUR(TM)s Beyond100+aEUR(TM) strategy.
