The federal government has in the last year announced some $3.1bn worth of taxpayer-funded support for struggling industrial plants, including Glencore's Mount Isa copper smelter and the Whyalla steelworks. These bailouts will support 3,500 jobs, which equates to nearly $1m of taxpayer assistance for each job. The government argues that the funding is also supporting many indirect jobs, including suppliers to these plants and local businesses that provide services to the companies' workers..
