Sep 22, 2025 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) --
There are a variety of reasons to query the federal government's objective of net zero by 2050, but bringing back car manufacturing to Australia is not one of them. Coalition frontbencher Andrew Hastie says he wants Australians to design and make "complex things", and "build things with our own hands"; he emphasises that it is not just about building cars. However, Hastie would be well advised to give up his ignorant defence of local car manufacturing and concentrate on the fact that the rising cost of energy is driving out local activities for which Australia can have a natural comparative advantage, in part because of the location of related ore bodies. The debate on whether Australia should persist with the costly and unachievable net zero by 2050 is well worth having; and there are clear signs that enthusiasm around the world for net zero is rapidly evaporating..
