Oct 12, 2025 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) --
Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen says the federal government has no plans to extend its safeguard mechanism to cover the electricity sector, despite calls by the Grattan Institute for it to do so. The think tank contends that the government will not be able to achieve its climate targets if it does not apply what amounts to a carbon tax on the sector. The Grattan Institute contends that applying the safeguard mechanism to the electricity sector would encourage the retirement of all coal-fired power stations by 2036, while not having a major long-term impact on electricity bills..
