US copper futures rose 13 per cent to a record high in response to President Donald Trump's plans to impose a tariff of 50 per cent on imported copper. Bernstein analysts believe that Chile, Canada and Peru may ultimately receive an exemption from the tariff regime, given that they are key trading partners of the US. This would benefit BHP and Rio Tinto, which are joint venture partners in Chile's Escondida copper mine.
