BTC Digital Ltd. (NASDAQ: BTCT), a blockchain technology firm formerly focused solely on Bitcoin mining, is making a strategic pivot toward Ethereum and on-chain financial infrastructure. The company recently established a $1M Ethereum (ETH) reserve, calling the asset its new "digital gold" and signaling a broader transition from mining services to decentralized finance (DeFi) participation.
CEO Siguang Peng emphasized Ethereum's emerging role in global finance, stating that the network has "emerged as the foundation of on-chain USD settlement and value transfer." Peng added, "By securing an initial $1M ETH reserve today and with plans to scale that position, we are proactively positioning ourselves for decentralized finance, stablecoin issuance, and asset tokenization."
A Dual-Reserve Strategy
The ETH reserve follows BTC Digital's announcement of a separate $1M Bitcoin (BTC) reserve, forming the foundation of a dual crypto treasury strategy. The company aims to expand its total crypto reserves to over $10M by the end of 2025. The reserves are intended to serve three main purposes:
- Supporting on-chain business deployment (including stablecoins and DeFi liquidity),
- Building infrastructure for real-world assets (RWA),
- Enhancing balance sheet resilience.
"BTC and ETH represent the 'central-bank-grade assets' of the stablecoin and RWA era," Peng said.
BTC Digital also indicated it is actively monitoring developments in U.S. dollar-pegged tokens, asset tokenization, and decentralized credit systems. Future initiatives may include Ethereum staking, Bitcoin-backed stable assets, and the launch of a real-world asset issuance platform.
Mining Roots Meet DeFi Ambitions
While BTC Digital began as a large-scale Bitcoin mining operation, the company is now rebranding itself as a participant in on-chain financial infrastructure. That evolution includes not just reserve building but physical infrastructure upgrades. Its 20 MW cryptocurrency mining project in Georgia has reached a significant milestone, with plans to integrate both air-cooling and liquid-cooling systems to improve energy efficiency and operational stability.
The company recently deployed 400 Bitmain Antminer T21 machines to bolster its Bitcoin mining output, along with 24 Bitmain Antminer L9 units for Litecoin. These moves show BTC Digital is maintaining its mining operations even as it diversifies into financial services tied to blockchain infrastructure.
CEO Peng reiterated the company’s commitment to "high-efficiency and green-mining solutions," noting that supplier agreements are already in place and equipment deployment is expected to ramp up in 2025.
Industry-Wide Trend Toward Ethereum Treasuries and Digital Assets
BTC Digital is now the second publicly traded Bitcoin miner to pivot toward Ethereum reserves. Earlier this month, Bit Digital (NASDAQ: BTBT) transitioned its entire crypto treasury from BTC to ETH, adopting a staking strategy that briefly sent its stock soaring by 30% before a subsequent 20% pullback.
In contrast, BTC Digital's stock climbed 13% in its most recent trading session, reflecting investor interest in its evolving strategy.
Currently, over 1.34M ETH is held in public ether treasuries, including those managed by DAOs, Layer-2 networks, and public companies, a sign of Ethereum's growing appeal among institutional and enterprise investors. Bitmine (NYSE: BMNR) announced its holdings of ETH now exceed $500M. The company closed on its initial private placement of $250M on July 9th in furtherance of its asset light treasury strategy.
Industry veteran, Founder and CEO of PCG Advisory, Jeff Ramson acknowledges digital assets such as Bitcoin's volatility but doesn't see it as a reason to not invest claiming that volatility exists in many investment opportunities such as early-stage tech platforms, exploratory biotechs, and thinly traded public stocks. Ramson is advising some of his clients on digital asset strategies, "This isn't about jumping on a trend. It's about ensuring you're not left behind as digital assets become an increasingly standard piece of modern treasury strategy."
