Queensland Cane Agriculture and Renewables chair Christian Lago has attacked the performance of sugar mills, stating that the season was a "long and painful one" for sugar cane growers. Most of the nation's ageing mills have stopped crushing for the season, despite there being over a million tonnes of cane left standing in paddocks, meaning that growers have not been able to take full advantage of high sugar prices and leaving them out of pocket by an estimated $83 million..
