Grid operators eye new rules for data centres

May 22, 2025 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) --

The Australian Energy Market Operator wants the Australian Energy Market Commission to change the electricity grid's rules to accommodate the growing number of data centres. AEMC chair Anna Collyer notes that the surge in demand for data centres is being driven by the rise of artificial intelligence, with some data centre facilities potentially needing as much electricity as a small city. The rise in demand for data centres comes at the same time as coal-fired power stations, which have underpinned the stability of the grid for many years, are reaching the end of their lives. Collyer says the rule changes that AEMO is seeking "will help reduce connection bottlenecks" while maintaining system security..
