Japan is dealing with a major rice shortage, due to a combination of heatwave-damaged crops, increased restaurant demand and panic buying, and the price of rice has quadrupled over the past year. Japan is under pressure from the Trump administration to import more rice from the US, and SunRice CEO Paul Serra says this could provide Australian rice producers with the opportunity to grab a larger share of the Japanese market; he claims Australian rice is specifically suited to Japanese consumers.
