The federal government will announce on Monday that it will commit $2 billion over 10 years to encourage Australia's four aluminum smelters to convert to using renewable energy. The policy will be announced at the Tomago aluminium smelter in the Hunter region of NSW, with the smelter being the biggest consumer of power in the state. Labor hopes its pledge will help it reach its target of reducing the nation's carbon emissions by 43 per cent on 2005 levels by 2030, as well as helping to protect an industry that is seen as vital to the future economy; the Australian aluminum industry is valued at $5.1 billion..
