The Australian sharemarket posted a modest gain on Thursday, with the S&P/ASX 200 adding 0.3 per cent to close at 8,226.3 points. Local investors were more cautious than their counterparts in the US, where the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices reached new highs in the wake of Donald Trump's presidential election win. However, a sharp fall in the gold price weighed on the shares of local producers. Iron ore and energy stocks also performed well, although the property sector was sold down..
