Independent senator David Pocock says the federal government should introduce a new mining profits super tax in the wake of its landmark critical minerals and rare earths deal with the US. Pocock contends that the nation's natural resources belong to all Australian, so "we need to get a fair cut" if they are to be exploited. Pocock has been a vocal critic of the petroleum resource rent tax, and he contends that the government must avoid repeating the past "mistakes" with the offshore LNG sector. Independent MPs Allegra Spender and Kate Chaney also support increasing the tax regime for producers of critical minerals and rare earths..
