Nguya FLNG unit sets sail for Congo LNG project

Aug 28, 2025 (MarketLine via COMTEX) --

The unit is set to enhance LNG production within the Marine XII concession offshore the Republic of Congo.

Eni has marked a significant milestone in the Congo LNG project with the sail away ceremony for the Nguya floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit in Shanghai, China.

This unit is poised to enhance liquefied natural gas (LNG) production within the Marine XII concession offshore the Republic of Congo.

Measuring 376m in length and 60m wide, the Nguya unit will be anchored at a water depth of 35m and instrumental in LNG production.

The FLNG unit has been engineered with advanced technologies to minimise its carbon footprint.

Its versatile technical specifications enable it to process gas from various fields, making it adaptable for future field developments, the company said.

In addition, the floating production and compression unit, previously known as the Scarabeo 5 drilling rig, has undergone refurbishment and is set to depart shortly. This unit will transport processed gas to the Nguya FLNG unit.

Eni said that this transformation has adhered to tight execution schedules, curtailed costs and reduced environmental impact, exemplifying the principles of the circular economy and industrial reuse in line with the companyaEUR(TM)s decarbonisation strategy.

Progress continues as planned on the subsea infrastructure necessary for the commencement of phase two of the Congo LNG project, with mooring and start-up scheduled by the end of 2025.

The Tango FLNG facility, which commenced production in December 2023 with a capacity of 600,000 tonnes per annum, has already exported 12 cargoes. It will soon be complemented by the Nguya FLNG unit, having a capacity of 2.4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), to reach a total project capacity of 3mtpa by year-end.

Eni has a long-standing presence in the Republic of Congo, extending over 55 years, and plays a pivotal role in exploiting the nation's abundant gas reserves.

The company also contributes to the Congo Power Plant, supplying 70% of the country's electricity generation capacity.

Eni is engaged in a multitude of projects aimed at enhancing access to energy, water, healthcare and fostering economic diversification for local communities.

Earlier this month, the company agreed to divest a 49.99% share in Eni CCUS Holding to Global Infrastructure Partners, a BlackRock affiliate and infrastructure investor.
