Rio Tinto is seeking government support for its Tomago aluminium smelter in NSW, with Premier Chris Minns confirming in June talks were being held in regard to saving it from closure. NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey is understood to be against the idea of a bailout, but opposition spokesman for energy James Griffin says it would be a huge loss to NSW's industrial base if the smelter was to close. He has proposed that the owners of Tomago join forces with data centres and jointly commission a large renewable energy project to power the smelter, reducing its energy bill. Tomago's current electricity supply contract with AGL Energy expires at the end of 2028, and it has not been able to replace it with reliable and affordable green power..
