Re-unionised Pilbara changes investment case: Rio Tinto

Aug 05, 2026 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) --

Rio Tinto's iron ore division accounted for $US6.8bn of group EBITDA in the first half of 2026; however, its copper arm's EBITDA rose by 84 per cent to $US5.7bn during the period. Iron ore CEO Matt Holcz has used a Melbourne Mining Club speech to warn that a push to re-unionise the Pilbara could undermine Rio Tinto's case for future investment in its iron ore operations, with commodities such as lithium and copper also competing for capital allocations. Rio Tinto is considering its options for developing the Rhodes Ridge iron ore deposits in the Pilbara, and Holcz has indicated that factors such as the tax regime and industrial relations laws will be influencial in deciding whether to invest in future iron ore projects..
