Rio rewards investors after profit spike

Jul 29, 2026 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) --

Rio Tinto has posted an after-tax profit of $US6.7bn for the first half of 2026, which is 47 per cent higher than previously. The result was boosted by the rising price of key metals, with the price of copper in particular surging in the last year or so. CEO Simon Trott says the global boom in data centres will be a key driver of demand for Rio Tinto's commodities in coming years. Rio Tinto's flagship iron ore division posted EBITDA of $US6.8bn for the half-year, and accounted for 43 per cent of underlying earnings. Its copper arm's EBITDA rose by 84 per cent year-on-year to $US5.7bn, and now accounts for 36 per cent of underlying earnings. Shareholders will receive an interim dividend of $US2.11 ($3.04) per share..
