Tech, banks lift ASX, but dollar hits miners

The Australian sharemarket posted a modest gain on Thursday, with the S&P/ASX 200 adding 0.4 per cent to close at 8,224 points. Xero was up 5.9 per cent at $171, the Commonwealth Bank rose 2.2 per cent to a new high of $152.84 and Nufarm advanced six per cent to $3.88. However, Fortescue ended the session 1.9 per cent lower at $17.94 and GrainCorp fell 2.9 per cent to $8.59..
