US Energy Secretary Chris Wright is developing a new gas-focused low-emissions strategy that Australia will need to embrace if it is to maintain current living standards and remain globally competitive. Wright notes that natural gas today supplies 25 per cent of global primary energy, while wind and solar supply only three per cent, while he contends that electricity prices have gone up in every area where there has been increased supply of renewables. Australia has experienced such issues with remote renewables facilities, and it can make them more efficient by combining them with natural gas "turn-off, turn-on" power. Australia should consider lifting its ban on nuclear energy, but only if it makes economic sense..
