The US Geological Survey's critical minerals list currently comprises 54 elements; they include zinc, platinum, dysprosium and praseodymium. Samarium is the most critical of the minerals on this list, due to its importance in manufacturing guided missiles, space vehicles and search and navigation instruments. Other rare earth elements, such as lutetium and terbium, also rank among the top 10, along with semiconductor chip materials gallium and germanium, as well as tungsten. Meanwhile, the USGS has removed tellurium and arsenic from the critical minerals list, while it has recommended adding lead, silver, copper, potash, silicon and rhenium to the list..
