WeRide Inc. (NASDAQ: WRD), a global leader in autonomous driving technology, has taken another step in its European growth strategy with the debut of its Robobus in Leuven. The launch, in collaboration with public transit operator De Lijn, the City of Leuven, and mobility consultancy Espaces-Mobilites, marks Belgium as WeRide's 11th market worldwide.
The project begins with mapping operations on the busy corridor between Leuven Station and Heverlee, an urban environment chosen for its challenging traffic patterns. Public road testing will start in mid-September with safety operators onboard, followed by a pilot passenger service from November 2025 through January 2026. If approved, the Robobus would become Belgium's first autonomous vehicle operating in mixed, real-world traffic.
During the pilot, passengers will be able to book rides through mobile apps, SMS, or subscription, with the Robobus integrated into Leuven's broader transit system. Longer-term, the program is expected to transition to fully driverless service, strengthening first- and last-mile transport links in the region.
Investor Takeaway: This expansion is a strategic milestone for WeRide. Operating in complex European city traffic provides critical validation of its AV platform, while regulatory and transit partnerships position the company to scale deployments across Belgium and beyond. A successful pilot could pave the way for recurring service revenues and greater adoption of autonomous public transport solutions.
