The fallout from the Iran war will require Australia to embrace a totally different industrial strategy. Australia will need to rebuild its industrial base, but the nation must must learn from the South Australian tragedy. BHP had in 2023-24 proposed a substantial expansion of the Olympic Dam uranium, copper and gold deposits in South Australia. However, BHP will now focus on expanding its operations in Chile and a major new development in Argentina; a decision on Olympic Dam has been postponed until at least the early 2030s. The reindustrialisation of Australia will result in higher costs, although this can be minimised with proper energy and industrial relations policies, as well as the streamlining of government regulations, including environmental rules..
