AMP's chief economist Shane Oliver says the Coalition's proposal to temporarily halve the fuel excise tax has no merit and is merely a "sugar hit". He argues that a similar move by the previous Coalition government in March 2022 had been justified given the spike in petrol prices in response to the invasion of Ukraine, but there has been no such spike in 2025. Oliver adds that the Reserve Bank would most likely ignore any temporary fall in the headline inflation rate arising from the policy and focus on its preferred measure of underlying inflation when setting interest rates..
