PM resists Trump tariff threat and ties to defence

Jun 01, 2025 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) --

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the Trump administration's move to double the tariff on steel and aluminium imports is an economic "act of self-harm" that will result in higher prices for US consumers. Trade Minister Don Farrell hopes to discuss the issue of tariffs - including the steel and aluminum hike from 25 per cent to 50 per cent and the broader baseline tariff of 10 per cent on all imports from Australia - with US trade representative Jamieson Greer at a meeting of world trade ministers in Paris this week. Albanese in turn is expected to lobby President Donald Trump for a tariff exemption when the two leaders attend the Group of Seven meeting in Canada in mid-June. He also also resisted a US push to ramp up defence spending amid China's growing presence in the Indo-Pacific region..
